Karisma Kapoor, Sunjay Kapur now officially divorced !
The family court on Monday granted divorce to yesteryear star Karisma Kapoor and business tycoon Sunjay Kapur on Monday. With the court’s permission, the almost 13-year-old marriage of the couple came to an end.
A lawyer involved in the case on condition of anonymity said that the family court granted divorce after it was informed that the matter has been resolved amicably at the Supreme Court. According to the lawyer, the court was also informed that the terms had been settled.
Another lawyer while talking to this paper confirmed the terms of consent on which the divorce is based. “The custody of the children will be granted to Karisma Kapoor while Sunjay Kapur would get visitation rights during the summer and winter vacations and also during Diwali. A flat in Khar, which is currently in the name of Sunjay Kapur, would be transferred in Karisma’s name. Along with that, Sunjay will have to buy bonds worth Rs 14 crore which would attract interest of up to Rs 10 lakh a month and would go towards maintaining the children,” said the lawyer. The lawyer said none of the suits in the case remained.
Sunjay and Karishma tied the knot in 2003 but things turned sour soon. The two tried to make things work after the Delhi high court advised them to explore the possibility of a settlement.
Karisma had moved base to Mumbai from Delhi in 2010. The couple decided to officially call it off in 2014 through a mutual consent divorce. However, strife flared up between the two due to a disagreement on financial settlement and custody of the children and the consent was withdrawn by both of them. This was followed by a lot of mud-slinging as Karisma filed a harassment suit against Sunjay and his mother, while Sunjay alleged she was using the children as a “pawn” to extract more money. He also said that Karisma deprived his ailing father access to his grandchildren. Sunjay had also applied for a fresh petition to move the suit from Mumbai to Delhi.
The two finally agreed for a mutual consent divorce when they reached an agreement regarding finances and the custody of the children at Supreme Court this May.
