A local panchayat in the Muzaffarpur district of north Bihar ordered a 60-year-old widow and her lover, a 32-year-old pan shop owner, to get married after the unusual couple was caught in a “compromising” position.
Sushil Kumar, 32, and Sushila, 60, entered into a village panchayat-sanctioned wedlock to give legal sanction to what had been a long clandestine relationship between the two neighbours.
Confirming the incident, Hattha mukhiya (village head) Sunita Kumari said the lovers were not ready to part ways despite social pressure.
“They were caught in an objectionable position. So, the panchayat ordered their wedding by their mutual consent,” She said.
The wedding took place on Saturday evening at their native Hattha village in Bandra block of Muzaffarpur, about 85 kilometres north of state capital, Patna. Representatives of the local village panchayat stood witness to the event.
Sushil, already married and father of two children, owns a betel shop. Sushila, a widow, sells snacks out of a kiosk adjacent to Sushil’s shop.
After the wedding, the couple left the village for an unknown destination. However, the station house officer of Hattha outpost said no such report had been lodged at the police station.
